From the Andes to the Atlantic
Argentina stretches through southern South America, with the Andes along its western border and the Atlantic to the east. It reaches from subtropical country in the north to cold southern islands and includes Aconcagua, broad plains, dry plateaus and a long coast.

The Pampas form a broad, level grassland in east-central Argentina. Fertile soils and a relatively mild climate support grain farming and livestock. Buenos Aires and other major settlements developed near this plain and the waterways of the Río de la Plata.

Patagonia contains dry plateaus and grasslands, with glacier-covered Andes along its western edge. Moist Pacific air loses rain and snow over the mountains, leaving the east drier. Farther south in Tierra del Fuego, colder conditions reveal the effect of Argentina's great north–south length.
