A country and a continent
Australia is both a country and a continent, surrounded by the Indian and Pacific oceans. Long isolation from other continents helped unique plants and animals develop. Its vast land can be understood through three broad regions: the Western Plateau, Central Lowlands and Eastern Highlands.

Much of the interior receives little rain and contains desert or dry grassland. Moist ocean air does not travel far inland, and some rivers do not flow all year. Most people live near the eastern, southeastern and southwestern coasts, where water and milder climates support cities and farming.

The Great Dividing Range runs for roughly 4,000 kilometres just inland from the east coast. It separates short rivers flowing to the Pacific from river systems draining inland. Although far lower than the Himalayas, it strongly influences rainfall, forests, farming and water supplies in eastern Australia.
