An exceptionally long north–south country
Chile stretches down the western edge of South America like a narrow ribbon. Its north–south distance is enormous compared with its width, crossing many degrees of latitude. That shape places one of Earth's driest regions, a mild central zone and the cold, wet and windy far south within one country.

The Andes rise along Chile's eastern side and the Pacific Ocean lies to the west. Cities and farmland fit into the land between them. The mountains shape the border and provide water and minerals, while the coast supports ports and fishing. Earthquakes and volcanoes are also part of this active margin.

The Atacama Desert in the north is among the driest places on Earth. Central valleys have a Mediterranean-type climate where cities and agriculture developed.
