Between the Caribbean and Pacific
Colombia lies in northwestern South America, with Caribbean coast to the north and Pacific coast to the west. It is the only South American country with shores on both. Its connection toward Central America through Panama gives it a distinctive position between oceans and continents.

The Andes enter from the south and divide into western, central and eastern ranges. The Cauca and Magdalena valleys run north between them, while Bogotá and other cities occupy high ground. Near the equator, elevation rather than season creates major differences in temperature and crops.
