The Nile links the country
On a map of Egypt, the Nile appears as a narrow green line running north through desert. It enters from Sudan, divides north of Cairo and reaches the Mediterranean through its delta. In a land with little rain, Nile water and river sediments have supported farming, cities and settlement from ancient times to the present.

Most of Egypt is arid desert. The Western Desert spreads west of the Nile and the mountainous Eastern Desert lies between the river and the Red Sea. People and farmland concentrate in the narrow Nile Valley and Delta because dependable water is scarce elsewhere.
