Coast, Andes and Amazon
Peru lies on the western side of South America and is often understood through three broad regions: a narrow Pacific coast, the Andes rising immediately inland, and Amazon forest descending eastward. Elevation, rainfall, vegetation and daily life change dramatically from west to east.

The Andes contain not only peaks but inhabited basins, valleys and plateaus. Roads cross steep ground and rivers cut deep valleys. Thinner air and lower temperatures at altitude change crops and livestock, while old towns and terraces show how people have adapted to mountain environments.
