Across most of the Iberian Peninsula
Spain occupies most of the Iberian Peninsula in southwest Europe, bordering Portugal to the west and France and Andorra to the northeast. It faces Atlantic waters to the north and west and the Mediterranean to the east and south. Coastal and inland climates differ markedly.

The broad, elevated Meseta occupies much of central Spain. Mountain ranges divide and surround it, helping give the interior—including Madrid—hot summers, colder winters and relatively dry conditions. Spain is easier to understand as a high plateau than as a flat lowland.
