Mountains, plain and peninsula
Thailand changes from northern mountains to a broad central plain and then to a long section of the Malay Peninsula. It borders Myanmar and Laos in the north, Cambodia in the east and Malaysia in the south. Following the map southward reveals sharp changes in relief, rivers and coasts.

Rivers from the north join in the central lowlands to form the Chao Phraya, which flows into the Gulf of Thailand. Sediment-built plains support rice farming, and Bangkok developed near the river's mouth. The same water system also makes seasonal flood planning important.
