Geography

An island country spread across the South Pacific
Fiji is an island country spread across a wide part of the South Pacific. Its islands look like small dots on a world map, yet broad stretches of ocean lie between them, making boats and aircraft essential links. Its position near the date line also places it at a crossroads between Melanesia and Polynesia.
[1]Two main islands
Viti Levu and Vanua Levu are Fiji's two main islands. The capital, Suva, stands on Viti Levu, where much of the population lives, while mountainous Vanua Levu lies to the northeast. Many smaller island groups differ in size, shape and distance from services and transport.
[1]Volcanic highlands and coral seas
The larger islands have mountainous volcanic interiors. Windward slopes receive heavier rain, while leeward areas are often drier, and some smaller islands are low coral formations. Rivers, mangroves and coral reefs sit close together, tightly linking land use with the health of the surrounding sea.
