At the southern end of Africa
South Africa lies at the southern end of the African continent, facing the Atlantic Ocean in the west and the Indian Ocean in the east. It completely surrounds the independent country of Lesotho. A long coastline and land that rises inland create strong regional differences in temperature, rainfall and vegetation.
[1]The interior plateau and Great Escarpment
A broad plateau averaging about 1,200 metres occupies much of the interior. The Great Escarpment rims it and rises especially high in the Drakensberg in the east. Travelling inland from the coast means climbing from low ground to this high interior, whose elevation keeps summers cooler than latitude alone might suggest.

South Africa is relatively dry overall, but rainfall seasons differ. The southwest around Cape Town receives much of its rain in winter, while most of the country is wetter in summer. A cold current near the west coast and warmer water to the east help create landscapes ranging from dry western country to greener eastern regions.
