On the southern Korean Peninsula
South Korea occupies the southern Korean Peninsula in East Asia. It faces the Yellow Sea to the west, the East Sea to the east and waters leading to the East China Sea in the south, while sharing a land boundary with North Korea. Japan lies across the sea. Its peninsular setting shapes ports, fisheries and weather.

Mountains cover much of the country, with the Taebaek range running along the east. The land generally drops toward broader western and southern lowlands. Larger plains occur mainly near lower river courses and coasts, concentrating farms and many cities on limited level ground.
