A highland country across the equator
Uganda is a landlocked East African country crossed by the equator in the south. Much of it stands on an elevated plateau, so temperatures are not uniformly as hot as latitude alone might suggest. High mountains rise near the eastern and western borders, with gentler uplands across the centre.

Lake Victoria spreads across Uganda's south and is shared with Kenya and Tanzania. Water leaving the lake joins the Nile system and travels north through rivers and wetlands. Lakes Albert and Edward lie along the west. Although Uganda has no sea coast, lakes and wetlands are a major part of its geography.

The western branch of the East African Rift runs near Uganda's western border, forming elongated lakes, steep escarpments and mountain country. The Rwenzori Mountains rise along the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Rift valleys and uplands guide drainage, habitats and travel routes.
