Find the Birds! Five National Flags
There is a bird hiding on each of these five flags. Can you find them?
Look closely to see where each bird is.
LOOK · FIND · REVEAL
Where can you find a bird?
Look across the whole flag. Once you spot a bird, compare its colour and the shape of its body and wings.
Found the birds? Reveal the answer
STEP 1 · FIND THE BIRDS
Where is each bird?
Albania
In the centre of a red flag.
Zambia
Towards the upper right of a green flag, above red, black and orange vertical stripes.
Uganda
Inside the central white circle, facing the flagpole side.
Papua New Guinea
In the red triangle. The Southern Cross is on the opposite, black side.
Dominica
Inside the central red circle, surrounded by ten green stars.
STEP 2 · COMPARE POSITIONS
In the centre, or somewhere else?
Near the centre: Albania, Uganda and Dominica
Away from the centre: Zambia and Papua New Guinea
All five flags have birds, but not in the same place. Look beyond the centre and check the edges too.
STEP 3 · COMPARE COLOURS
What colour is the bird?
Albania
A black bird.
Zambia
An orange bird.
Uganda
Several colours, including grey, white and black.
Papua New Guinea
A yellow bird.
Dominica
Several colours, including green and purple.
Some birds use one colour, while others use several. Look at the bird itself, not just the background.
STEP 4 · COMPARE SHAPES
Are all five birds drawn in the same way?
Albania
Two heads, with wings spread to either side.
Zambia
In flight, with wings spread.
Uganda
Standing, with one leg raised.
Papua New Guinea
Wings spread, with long feathers extending behind it.
Dominica
Perched on a twig.
Compare the heads, wings and legs. A bird in flight looks different from one standing or perched on a branch.
STEP 5 · LEARN THE NAMES
Different birds, different names
Albania
Double-headed eagle
Zambia
African Fish Eagle
Uganda
Grey Crowned Crane
Papua New Guinea
Bird of Paradise
Dominica
Sisserou Parrot
Uganda's government identifies the crane as its national bird. Dominica's government identifies the Sisserou Parrot as its national bird. Sharing a bird design does not give every flag the same meaning.
STEP 6 · THREE WAYS TO LOOK
Where? What colour? What pose?
① Where is the bird?
Check the centre, the corners and the edges.
② What colour is it?
Look at the bird separately from the flag's background.
③ What pose does it have?
Compare its head, wings, legs and tail.
Flags with birds can look very different. Their position, colour and pose help you discover the differences.
What else is beside the birds?
Papua New Guinea also has the Southern Cross; Dominica has stars around its parrot. Explore those shared themes on pages comparing other countries.

What other animals can you find on flags?
When you find one, try comparing its position, colour and pose too.
